Everybody knows that beer is the beverage of choice when kicking back with your bros, watching football, or relaxing after work. But who knew it could do other things besides making you wake up with your head sewn to the carpet.
Everyday with Rachael Ray has discovered 10 clever uses for your cold ones.
1. “Banish brown spots on the lawn”
While tipping them back by the bonfire, pour some out for your yard. Pour less than a half a cup on your lawn’s trouble spots and the beer’s fermented sugars will kill any fungus and feed the grass, bringing it back to life.
2. “Conquer cast-iron cleanup”
Save yourself from scrubbing the cooked on mess left on your cast iron pans. Pour beer in the pan while it is still warm and it will prevent the food from sticking. Try adding beer while cooking to season the pan.
3. “Turn out fluffier pancakes and waffles”
Instead of the liquid called for in the recipe, use beer instead! The result will be much more fluffier pancakes and waffles.
4. “Loosen rusty bolts and screws”
Rusty bolts or screws can put a screeching halt to any do it yourself project. Reach over to that beer you’ve been sipping on and pour some on the bolt or screw. Give it a minute and it should come right out. The secret is the carbonation; it breaks down the rust.
5. “Cook juicy chicken”
Take an open, half full can of beer and stick it up…um…the chicken’s cavity, and season it with salt, pepper, and spices. Place the whole thing vertically on a grill or a pan in the oven. The beer will evaporate inside, resulting in a delicious juicy chicken.
6. “Prevent garden pests”
Place small jars full of beer in your garden to get rid of annoying garden pests. The pests are attracted to the sugar in the beer. Once they drop in for a dip, they won’t be able to come back out. This works for keeping insects away from your guests at parties as well.
7. “Make jewelry sparkle”
You can make your old gold shiny again using a light ale and a towel to polish. The acid in the beer removes dirt and makes it shine.
8. “Give your hair shine”
Mix 1 cup beer with 1 egg yolk and apply to hair. Let set for a few minutes and then rinse with shampoo.
9. “Get a better night’s sleep”
Add a little beer to the water when you wash your pillowcases. There is a chemical compound in the hops in beer that has a calming and sedative effect.
10. “Soothe your soles”
Mix room temperature beer with warm peppermint tea (50/50). Soaking your feet for 20 minutes in this potion will soften your calluses.
